U.S. Synagogues Tighten Security post by Elea Ortega

U.S. Synagogues Tighten Security

Officials from the United States Department of Homeland Security visited Chicago this week to deal with security issues involving local synagogues. Jewish centers in the city were apparently the targets in a recent bomb plot. On Wednesday, officials will begin conference calls with Jewish leaders across the country to discuss security.

Briskman said it is “not surprising” that terrorists are targeting American Jews, and Jews worldwide, in addition to Israelis.

New York state assemblyman Dov Hikind called on synagogues to institute security measures, suggesting that an attempt to target Jewish institutions in New York City is inevitable.

Last Friday, two packages sent from Yemen and addressed to Jewish institutions in Chicago were intercepted and found to contain explosives. The bombs were powerful enough to bring down a plane, making it unclear whether they were to be set off after reaching the Chicago synagogues, or in mid-flight. A British expert said the explosive material was strong enough to destroy 50 planes.

Jewish institutions have been targeted in terrorist attacks around the world on many occasions in recent years. In 2006 a shooter targeted the Seattle Jewish Federation, murdering one woman and injuring others. During the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks, the Chabad-run Nariman House was targeted and eight Jews were murdered.

**************************** My opinion **********************************

Until when they will stop hating the jews? You really want to know what is my opinion about it?
What people should do is start praying, for this tragedies to stop.
There's also something going on with the security, how can be possible that they don't detect if there is a bomb or not in the plane. I consider that the security must be more strict in the airports, because that can bring serious damage, because what if that bomb explodes in the plane, all the innocent people will be death. What the world needs is more security and more people praying for this tragedies to stop.

  1. I completely agree with your first point about the persecution of Jewish.Within all the history they have been targeted and now i think that this population had suffer enough. For the second argument about strengthen security in air plane, i don't think that it the solution used are the best.the only one who suffer of airplane restrictions are the passenger (I m sure you have ever been confronted to a situation in which you just buy something and they ask you to finish it our through it).You will say "security is the priority", but the restriction policies don't even work because there is 1001 ways to make an explosive.

  2. Hi, Elea:
What a great concern for all human beings! I am totally with you. Those who try to undermine the security of any countries should be condemned to a life of punishment, and those who try to save people out of this terrible situation should be appreciated. I suggest the security board come up with a better solution rather than just prevent those things.
