British decrease their alcohol consumption

Following the British beer and Pub association (BBPA), the British reduce from 6% their alcohol consumption in 2009 which the most important decline since 1948 (yes, 61 years). This decline might be a consequence of the increase of taxes on alcohol.
Nevertheless, following the national statistic office, 39% of men and 31% of women get over the reasonable limit of daily consumption which is 3 to 4 alcohol units* for men and 2 to 3 units for women.
*one alcohol unit corresponds to 10ml of ethyl (about 20ml of an alcohol drink)
This is, in all points, a good think because, knowing that the majority of accidents are caused by a abused of alcohol, this decline ,we hope, will decline the number of accidents. And because the state government increase the taxe on alcohol, even if their is less consumers, alcohol sellers and pub owners steel earning about the same benefit so... everybody win.

Hi, Hamadoun:
ReplyDeleteThis news is really interesting. It makes me think about the alcohol comsumption in Oxford, and The Board of commitee is now considering no sales of alcohol on Sundays. I think both governement, the British governement and the US. government, are trying to decrease the use of alcohol. Because of the use of alcohol, some people might not be able to get up and work next day. Another thing about this problem is that some work a dangerous job and if they didn't sleep well the night before they might get hurt in their jobs.

I consider that the fact that the alcohol consumption has decreased is a good situation, because as you said, Hamadoun, the alcohol is one of the main reasons why, people died every single day. Driving drunk is one of the reason why so many families lost their loves one.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, nobody should sell alcohol in the world, even though it is an important income source for germans as an example.
Although, if we look it from the other point of view, this is a serious problem for the people who sell alcohol to the pub, and the families that depends from those jobs. The less that people consume, the less that people from the pubs are going to sell. Which is going to become a financial problem.

This article make me confused when I read it at the beginning. U.K. consider one of the top countries that consumed alcohol. Then I read all of it and figure out it was comparison between 2009 and 2010.
ReplyDeleteAlcohol consumption is necessity evil for some people. this statistics seem to be great, 6 percent less than 2010 means awareness of citizen how to consume alcohol beverages.
I honestly don't think that this would make any change. Numbers are only useful when it's about economy. But in real life, and if we compare UK consumption with other countries, the situation it's still really critical.
