Paul Henry New Zealander TV Host |
Paul Henry, the TV Host of a popular morning show broadcast by the state-owned New Zealander chanel TVNZ, laughed and joked about the name of the Delhi Chief Minister, Sheila Dirkshit. The reason for these jokes was the spelling of the politician's surname, which in English language sounds like "Dirxit"(alluding to the bad word sh#t). Mr. Henry told to his viewing audience: "It is a perfect name for her, especially because she is from India".
Indian government's reactions were swift. This morning, India's foreign minister has summoned the New Zealand high commissioner alleging: "This declarations are unacceptable to India and they must be condemned for all the right-thinking people and nations".

In my Opinion....
India's government has strong reasons to be upset and offended. The comments pronounced by this TV host and important figure for the New Zealand's media were more than inappropriate and out of place. What he thought will be funny joke that would rise his TV show rating, has became in a diplomatic altercation between India and New Zealand and a shame for his own country. I agree with the public opinion in India that there was a considerable dose of racism in his remarks. While people like him, with the same archaic and intolerant ideologies continue behind the microphone or on front of a camera, racism will keep spreading all over the world.
This news is hilarious. I think the host goes too far. He has the right to criticize India's racistsand to condemn them. What he should not do is to laugh the Chief Minister, not only because it's offensive but also that wouldn't help anything. However, once out the bottom line, he would get himself in trouble.
ReplyDeleteThis case is similar to mine, and I think the same way. It's all about respect and act according to the circumstances. If you represent your country through a media station you must act like it. Imagine if all hots of television programs suddenly starts to laugh at everybody's names on camera, it will be a massive act of offending not only people but their cultures, and that could end in a really huge international problem.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely. Personally i think that it can be fine to joke at tv ,even if it is about people, some may find it rude but this men is just doing his job:find audience. The part that became unforgivable is that by saying that he doesn't attack one individual but a hole nation and that is what got to be punished.

ReplyDeleteI agree that the presentator goes too far with his joke, but I don't really see it as a racist act.I can't undestand why people are so attentive and try to find every single behaviour of a citizen of another country, every single thing as a racist issue. I think we need to be more open mind, we have some preconceive ideas and every actions that a stranger does, every negative comment he does we tend to see it as a racist issue. It is clear that we should not close our eye on racist issue, but we sometimes overreact or we exaggerate and this kind of negative perception becomes more racist than the fact that causes them.

ReplyDeleteTV hosts should behave politely, understanding what they say is broadcast all over the world. Enjoying audience is very important by jokes as a role of TV host, but it is too rude. He should apologize to the victim and people in India thorough the media in order to recognize people in the world.
